Build Traffic on your Site
Building traffic to your site is key to getting a good blog working or earning revenue from your site. There are some important things you should do for your site to help improve you chances of being noticed and getting up the rankings of the search engines.
Search Engine Optimisation
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is how to make your site as friendly as possible for the search engines so that your site will be picked up on a search for your relevant subject. The major search engines that you should focus on are Google, Yahoo and MSN. They each have complicated algorithims to produce the results for any particular search.
Your HTML Page
Firstly you should look at your HTML files. Each file has a Title and a Meta tag which is a file descrfiptors at the top of your file. Ensure that you have a description that adequately describes your site and ensure that and that it includes key words relevant to the subject matter.
When it comes to your page content ensure that the key words which describe your content are mentioned through out your page. These will be picked up by the search engines.
Add your Site to the major Directories
There are many sites to which you can have your site added. Submitt your URL and you will have a better chance of being found!
The Open Directory Project
This is a project run by volunteers which list all website URL's submitted. The Open Directory is the most widely distributed data base of Web content classified by humans. Its editorial standards body of net-citizens provide the collective brain behind resource discovery on the Web. The Open Directory powers the core directory services for the Web's largest and most popular search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.You can get your site listed at www.dmoz.org.
Add to Google Directory
Another way to get listed in Google other than through the Open Directory Project is to add your URL directly through Google at www.google.com/addurl.html. Be aware that all sites are not added by Google and it may take some time to get added so be patient.
You may also get listed if you are linked from a site that is already in Google. When Google's spider visits that site for updates, it will pick up the link to your site and add it. Again there is no guarantee that this will work but it will increase your chances.

Google Adwords
Google adwords is definitely a good way to get started. Essentially you will make an add such as those you see along the right column of Thewebsitenovice. Its not free but I will use them initially to see if my traffic improves. You can find them at www.google.com/adwords.
